Which ‘Mode Scale’ can be used over a ‘Chord Quality ?
Formula for finding the appropriate scale:
Chord Tones are the, 1 - 3 - 5- 7 of the Scale
Add a whole tone to each Chord Tone
( ex. ) C Major 7
add a whole tone to the 1, 3, 5,
you should get :
C, D, E, F#, G, A, B, C

Imaj7 chord Ionian mode
IIm7 chord Dorian mode with a natural 7
IIIm7 chord Phrygian mode (only rarely used)
IVmaj 7 Lydian Dominant 7
V7 chord Mixolydian mode
VIm7 chord Aeolian mode
VIIø chord Locrian mode.
