Thank you Garrett!! I Do appreciate the review.
Frankly, I agree with the "too much reverb" comment on the vocals.
It was a last minute decision to add reverb and I was so inexperienced
with Mix Craft 6 software, that I failed to understand how to tweak the reverb
the way I wanted it. You are certainly correct that with reverb, "less is more".
I also think I over played the drums. It sounds like I made it necessary
to align every beat 1 and beat 3 with a double bass drum hit with the Bass guitar notes.
My feeling is that the bass could "suggest" the beat and let the drums hit once more often
instead of twice.
You're also correct that this song is still in development. I began working on it in Oct 2015,
totally in MIDI format. Unhappy with MIDI's limited instrument selection, I wanted something
better. A singer friend of mine gave me Mix Craft 6 with a really nice Mic included,
and I began xfering from MIDI to a Mix Craft workspace.
I've done "15 takes" on this song since 2015, and probably I'll do 10 more before I'm happy with it.. LOL!
Thanks again for the input. It was just what I was looking for!
I thought you might like to hear the original recording with real musicians that we made in 1998, on a cassette recorder at the keyboard player's house. The lyrics are the old version,
and we only recorded two verses and the ending refrain, because of time constraints.
I wrote the song in 1979 while walking to work at IBM, and forgot about it.
Then in 1998 while playing with a blues band, we decided to pull out originals that some of us had written.
I introduced "On A New Day" to the keyboard player and he "massaged" the chords to make them transition better, as well as changed the key.
I couldn't have gotten the song as far as I did without his help.
He passed away in 2013 of a brain tumor, and I decided I wanted to carry on with the song and try to do something with it, in his memory.
I just can't seem to recreate what these guys did with my tune, and I can't seem to get the
same vocal energy either... Of course, it was 19 years ago..
Anyway, here's the link for that recording in 1998:
